Tony’s Stats
Thursday, June 18th, 2009
The Study Support Centre’s own Tony Coleman has been trawling the league tables and has found out something very interesting. Out of the 92 league clubs, 43 teams have achieved Premiership status at some point throughout their history. That’s almost half of all clubs. The Premier League has 20 teams, there are 15 ex-premier teams in the Championship, 7 in League One and Bradford are the only team to have played in the Premier League in Two.
Burnley were promoted to the Premier League this season and are the latest to join the elite list.

Media with Priory Woods
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
This week was the first in the series of sessions at the centre for Priory Woods. Learners are taking part in two different media courses.
One group will be making their own radio shows including their own jingles, news articles and an interview with with a special guest from within the radio industry. They’ll be using the latest professional level audio equipment including HHB Flash Mics, Samson CO3U Podcast Kits and GarageBand on Apple iMacs. They’ve already made a great start by interviewing Sara Fellows from BBC Tees who has great radio experience having presented her own show on various stations as well as traffic and travel. The interview had to be edited and so the learners moved on to the iMacs for a quick tutorial on GarageBand. GarageBand is so easy to use that the interview was almost fully edited before the end of their first session.
Another group from Priory Woods are taking part in a movie making course using video cameras and iMovie on Apple iMacs. This week the learners were shown a Study Support Centre favourite, Speed Stacks. They were given a little time to play with the Speed Stacks before being shown the equipment that they’ll be using over the coming weeks. Once they got to know how to operate the camera they recorded each other playing with the Speed Stacks. There was time for a quick tutorial on iMovie before they left so that the learners could begin editing their movies in the next session.

Communicating for Success – Hall Garth (Training Day)
Monday, February 9th, 2009
Students with their parents and teachers from Hall Garth Community Arts College were invited to the study support centre to take part in a Communicating for Success training session. Interview skills such as asking open questions where the interviewee can answer with an explaination rather than closed questions where a simple yes or no answer will do. Everyone also learned how to use a microphone and GarageBand to record the interview.
- Students attempt to solve a tricky puzzle
- Inter-generational Communication in action
- Parents, staff and students share their memories
All of this training was to prepare the participants for an event to be hosted at Hall Garth Community Arts College on Wednesday 11th February between 10:00am-11:45am.
The event will see Boro ledgends Frank Spraggon, Alan Peacock and Jim Platt share their football memories with students and their family and friends. These audio from these conversations will be captured and used later in poems that the participants will write with the assistance of published poet and author Andy Croft. The poems will then be put to pictures and music using the centre’s ICT facilities.
